Applying for Social Security Disability Benefits: Where to Begin and Tips for Success

In the last two decades applications for Social Security Disability benefits have more than doubled, though less applicants (about one third) are ultimately receiving benefits. What this means for new applicants and those with pending claims is that you need to be prepared every step of the way. The good news is that there are some easy tips that you can follow.

ss.jpgFirst, be diligent about collecting medical documentation. Keep appointment cards and any documents you get after leaving a doctor appointment. If your medical providers upload medical documents online, make sure you know how to access those documents.

Second, be patient. The journey to getting disability benefits varies per case. For those who appeal a denied application and go before a Social Security Judge, the process can take years.

Third, hire an attorney-what is called an "Appointed Representative"-to help you through what can be an otherwise stressful and complicated process. The application and appeal process through the Social Security Administration is not easy without a skilled attorney to guide you through the process. Throughout that process, there are vital steps that cannot be skipped. Whether you have never applied, have been denied in the past, or are waiting for your hearing date, an attorney can assist you with completing important documents. Your attorney will be there to answer your questions throughout the process.

Most importantly, many applicants eventually have a hearing in front of a Social Security Judge. From explaining the hearing process to you in advance, to ensuring that the Judge has certain documents prior to the hearing, having an attorney at this stage in the process can make all the difference.

If you have additional questions about Social Security, including Social Security Disability benefits and Supplemental Security Income, please contact the law firm of Winegar, Wilhelm, Glynn, & Roemersma to speak to an experienced attorney.
