Why does UM/UIM matter?

Few people like to think about insurance. Fewer still like to spend money they do not need to spend on insurance. Getting the lowest possible rate for auto insurance might make sense for your situation. This leads many people to forego UM/UIM coverage. Currently in Pennsylvania, UM/UIM insurance is optional. It is mandatory in New Jersey. In both states, it is against the law to drive without a minimum amount of auto insurance.

We are not an insurance company, and we do not sell insurance. We are, however, a personal injury law firm that has handled car accidents for decades. We have extensive experience in dealing with insurance companies, policy language, and other aspects of car insurance in the aftermath of an accident.

One of the most important and least understood aspects of a common auto policy is uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. This is insurance that covers you if you are in an accident with a driver who is without insurance, or if the at-fault driver only has the minimum policy required under state law.

Many drivers do not comply with these state laws and drive uninsured. According to Insurance Research Council data, as many as one in eight drivers are uninsured in Pennsylvania. These drivers may be on the road after missing payments, or driving on a revoked or suspended license. You could be involved in a hit-and-run and so the insurance information of the other driver is currently unavailable.

In not having UM/UIM coverage, you run the risk of being left uncompensated for damage to your car and the medical expenses associated with the accident.

We can’t tell you what insurance is right for you. It depends on your comfort with risk, your family and life situation, and your finances. Just note, if you choose not to carry UM/UIM insurance, you are running the risk of being left without options in the aftermath of an accident with an uninsured driver. As a personal injury law firm, we pursue every possible source of compensation for car accident victims, including from the injury victims’ own insurance company based on their UM/UIM policy. Without UM/UIM coverage, this option is off of the table.
