Traffic safety tips for the new school year

stop sign buss.jpgIt's that time of year again! With the school year beginning, an important thing to focus on is safety. Kids can face serious safety risks when they are going to and from school. Situations in which kids can be particularly vulnerable include when they are crossing streets near their school or getting on or off of their school bus.

Among the things that can impact how safe kids are on their journey to and from school is how drivers act. This is a good time of the year for drivers to refresh themselves on what steps they can take to help protect students when driving in school zones or near school buses. Here are a few tips:

  • Be watchful - Keep a close eye out for students who may be walking in the area.
  • Avoid distractions - Stay off of your cellphone and away from other things that could take your attention away from driving safely.
  • Watch your speed - Keeping your speed down when driving in areas where students are likely to be around can give you more time to react to the unexpected.
  • Know the rules -There are special traffic rules regarding school zones and school buses. It is very important to be aware of these rules and follow them.

This is also a good time of year for parents to talk to their children about what they can do to stay safe when traveling to and from school. Here are some examples of safety tips parents may want to discuss with their kids:

  • Don't walk behind a school bus
  • When crossing in front of a bus, make eye contact with the driver and stay at least five big steps from the bus's front
  • Keep no fewer than three big steps away from the curb when waiting for the bus
  • Don't run or play at the bus stop
  • Don't approach the bus until it completely stops and the driver says it's alright to start coming on board

We wish all students in New Jersey and Pennsylvania a safe and happy school year!
