The holidays are coming, and this year, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day all come at the beginning of the week they are in. That being said, many people will be getting some long weekends over the holiday season this year. We hope that these holiday weekends, in addition to being enjoyable and a nice break from work, also prove to be safe.

However, there is some concern that drunk driving may be an even bigger, more common problem than usual because of where the holidays land.

At any time of the year, drunk driving can cause devastation on the roads. Drunk driving has historically been a major cause of traffic deaths around the holidays. The organization MADD has expressed concern that drunk driving accident fatalities may hit particularly high levels this holiday season due to the long weekends because longer weekends could mean more days of celebrations, including celebrations involving alcohol.

It is important for motorists to take the steps necessary to ensure that their holiday celebrations don’t lead to drunk driving or other unsafe conduct. Having a designated driver or using alternate transportation (like mass transit or ridesharing) are a couple of examples of ways to practice safety.

We hope the upcoming holidays are safe for everyone out on the roads, and no one encounters an accident of any kind. However, if you find yourself involved in a drunk driving accident, do not hesitiate to contact our attorneys. We will work with you to determine what steps you need to take in order to handle the situation at hand.
