As part of the restoration of driving privileges, Pennsylvania and New Jersey may require anyone who receives a DUI to install the ignition interlock in their vehicle. Whether or not you will be required to install the device depends upon the circumstance, but it is important to understand it may come with your conviction.

The ignition interlock is a device that is placed in your vehicle that requires you to provide a breath sample before the vehicle can be started. If the device detects alcohol, it will prevent your vehicle from starting.

If you are required to have the ignition interlock in your vehicle, you must lease it from an approved ignition interlock vendor, but you will be required to pay for all fees associated with its installation and maintenance. Additionally, you will be required to obtain a limited license that will indicate that you have an interlock device. The penalties for failing to install the ignition interlock, driving without the ignition interlock when required to do so, or tampering with the device can include an extension of time you are required to keep the device in your vehicle, fines and extra costs, as well as possible imprisonment.
