Holidays can be stressful for everyone, but for the children of divorced or separated parents, it can be particularly challenging.

1. Compromise. As a parent, you want your children with you for the holidays. However, in a separated family, it is not always possible. Compromise with your ex-spouse about the visitation schedule, and allow your children to spend time with each of their parents if possible.
2. Communicate. Communication is key. Working together to communicate plans, what gifts to buy, etc. is essential in order to alleviate any additional stress the season may bring.
3. Avoid confrontation. Disagreements between parents is the last thing a child puts on his or her wish list. Avoid confrontation with your ex-spouse to help create a positive, supportive environment for yourself and your children.
4. Make time. The holidays can be very stressful, but don’t allow the stress to keep you from spending quality time with your children. Decorate the tree, watch movies, or bake cookies together. Your kids will cherish these moments for years to come.
Holidays don’t need to be a time of confusion and distress. By making a conscious effort to put your children first, you can be assured that everyone will have an enjoyable holiday season.
