Winter can bring certain dangers including traffic safety hazards posed by cold temperatures, snow and ice. While driving in poor weather conditions can be difficult, there are some steps drivers can take to protect themselves from possible dangers.

Make sure your car is fit for winter

There are many parts and systems of a vehicle that can have big impacts on how safe a person is while driving in winter weather. This includes the:

  • Tires
  • Braking system
  • Windshield wipers
  • Battery

It is wise to check your vehicle to see if these things are in proper working order and are able to handle the challenges winter can pose for a vehicle. Parts or systems that are unsafe for winter should be promptly repaired or replaced.

Be smart behind the wheel

What drivers do when out on the roads in winter matters a great deal. Below are some safety tips for driving in winter weather:

  • Keep your speed down
  • Stay attentive and avoid distractions
  • When in a skid, gently steer in the desired direction and stay off of the brakes and accelerator until traction starts to be regained
  • Stay in low gears when going up and down hills

Remember, take caution when driving in abnormal weather conditions. Not only will it keep you safe, but it will prevent others on the road from being involved in a dangerous situation.
